Still I Rise

Today, I celebrate Maya Angelou. I am by no means an expert on Angelou. But, sometimes, you read something from a writer that so deeply resonates, the words remain inside you. For me, this is my story with Maya. I haven’t read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I haven’t read Letter to My Daughter. Rather, I was first introduced to Angelou through a poem she wrote entitled, Touched By an Angel. Her written words were exquisite and beautiful. Not long after, I read a few lines of her poem Still I Rise in the book, The Dance of…

A Spark, Some Fear & Bravery

Did you know there’s a path marked especially for you? “I don’t know what it is,” you say. Shhhhhh… let’s sit and listen for a while. Do you hear it? (hum.) It’s your life speaking. Notice the spark which lights you from within? See how time is forgotten when you are in the flow? What’s that? Bubbling anger? Don’t dismiss it. It has come to teach you something. Does this injustice need your unique voice? “I’m afraid,” you admit. Beloved, I see your fear. Fear of change. Fear of joy. “I have too much to lose. I’m scared of excess…

From the beginning, God shows up as a loving God who doesn’t oppress but frees. When evil lurks, God is in the midst rising up new leadership. When people are hungry, God provides manna. Where other systems use the high and mighty, God uses the outcast and least of these. When people fail God, God forgives and gives another chance. Our faith lies in a God who restores peace and wholeness…

Waiting in Empty Spaces

I was stopped at a red light a few days back when I spotted a bumper sticker on the back of an AT&T van. It said, “Put your phone down. Keep your eyes on the road. It can wait.” Although this whole message is an imperative one for us in this age of texting,  I found myself honing in on three little words. It. Can. Wait. This is not asked of us too often in 2016. These days, everything is at our fingertips. News. Music downloads. Photos instantly shared. Fast lanes at amusement parks. We can even grab hot soup…
