Lent Week 4: The Upper Room Owner’s Dream

We are halfway through Lent, and I continue to creatively lean into the people of Scripture to hear the hidden stories. I’ve always been captivated by those people who we catch a mere glimpse of, yet, without them, the story of Christ would be drastically different. This week, I consider the story of the House owner who hosted Jesus and the disciples in his upper room for the Last Supper. I’ve always wondered about this house owner and his gracious hospitality. Reading from the Book of Luke 22:7-13 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb…

Lent Week 3: Story of a Blind Man

This week, I continue my Lenten journey to creatively engage with Scripture. Today, I visit with a blind man healed by Jesus. Once the blind man was healed, he sure stirred things up with the Pharisees as he didn’t back down from their stream of questioning. As I wrote, I imagined this blind man giddily retelling his story to his children or grandchildren. Below is the beginning of his story in the book of John, however, this story in its’ entirety is all of Chapter 9 of John. Bible Gateway is a great resource to search and read portions of…

Lent Week 2: An Observant Parent

This week, I continue to creatively engage with Scripture during the Season of Lent. Today, I journey with Jesus into his ministry. There are so many interesting stories to consider and imagine with. There are a plethora of stories to reflect and learn from. Maybe because I am a parent myself, I chose to reflect upon the story where Jesus welcomes the children. I put myself into the shoes of what it may have been like to be a parent witnessing the blessing of Christ upon my child. I wrote in the form of a memoir left to a child…

Lent Week 1: The Tempter

You are invited to come along with me during this Season of Lent to reflect on the inner voices of different characters of Scripture during Jesus’ life. This is new territory for me as I embark to engage Scripture creatively, listening for what surfaces between the lines of the text. My prayer before I begin writing is that the Spirit guides my words and for the words to be an offering to God. I begin this week with Satan, who I like to refer to as “The Tempter”. May this prompt your own consideration of imagination and theology as friends,…

Holy Joy

Last Summer, Inside Out, an animated Disney film for children made it’s debut in movie theaters. As usual, the Disney storytellers skillfully wove a soulful message for adults into the script. The movie opens with a young girl, Riley, and her family leaving all they’ve ever known to move from Minnesota to  California. The story engages when it zooms into the conversation of varying voices in Riley’s head. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust entertain as they interact with wit and humor. For Riley, Joy is in the driver seat. Joy, the one who always looks on the bright side…
