Ash Wednesday · Beginning of LentFebruary 17th, 2021 I’m drainedfrom invitations to follow the Light —eyes on the prize of resurrection. As ifthe lightis the only thingwe needto seek,and it’s there. No. (there.) Just. out. of. reach. Separate from me. I try to grasp it. Arms stretched. Fingers. Can’t. Reach. the Blaze. I fall on my knees. Exhausted from Trying. Overhead, silver fingers wisp in the sky;they point to the ground. I take my fingers and press them into soft soil,move them through blades of grass —dirt finds my fingernails;I start to digwithout thought. Soon enough,I’m elbows deepin faint memorieslaced…

Marked for Resurrection

A blend of ash and oilsmudged upon my forehead.This mark.Not one of mourning,nor for the mortality of suffering —but rather,to honor the dust of our livesas atoms of transformationthat hover in the wakeof our becoming. Divine breath speaks,“Let there be light.”And, there IS.Here —I am sparked. Lit anewto walk the road,shed outgrown skin,claim holy desires that reside within,walk toward the resurrectionof Christlikeness only I can bring to the world. Today, I am marked to live fully. And, it is good.Very good.

Today, Ash Wednesday, begins the Season of Lent. I will offer weekly artwork based on a piece of Scripture with a Visio Divina prompt followed by several questions to ponder.
