“I’ve seen women insist on cleaning everything in the house before they could sit down to write… and you know it’s a funny thing about housecleaning… it never comes to an end. Perfect way to stop a woman. A woman must be careful to not allow over-responsibility (or over-respectability) to steal her necessary creative rests, riffs, and raptures. She simply must put her foot down and say no to half of what she believes she “should” be doing. Art is not meant to be created in stolen moments only.” – Clarissa Pinkola Estés
Listen, first things first.
You must protect your spark
from the wind of naysayers.
This isn’t selfish.
This is life or death to your spirit.
In fact, I recommend to
place encouragers around your ember.
These joy fillers will
fan your flame of colorful juice.
When your flicker stirs, you’ll need space.
Lots of space to experiment
with marks of dawning. This very act
will release a perfume of holy smoke.
Allow this sacred aroma to
be swept by the open air
to draw those near who long
for a life giving way
to connect to the divine.
Hear me when I say, you also need
containment. A way to stay focused
on a few important matters. Spreading yourself
thin leads to the curse of the grouchies.
Yes, yes, this topic of environment is
imperative. You must keep tabs.
An expressive wildfire can burst out on dry land.
A saturated ground leads to a smothered glow.
Another thing. I know you.
You want to start checking boxes
from the list of “what I should be doing”.
Trust me, you’ll go to sleep and burn out.
Best to keep with organic flow.
Once you’ve learned from the rhythm
of ebb and flow from the ocean tides
and your blaze is a bountiful bouquet,
take care to tend to it often.
When you stay present to the now
your inner ears will open to
what your creative fire needs.
For those who have ears to hear.
Take a risk.
Rest when rest calls.
your disco dazzle
in the first place.
Carry on my dear creative friend.
