Today, in the United States of America, is our National Day of Prayer.
Join me in prayer today, will you?
What is a prayer?
Is a prayer —
spoken words formed from one’s lips?
a single thought lifted high?
a song in one’s heart?
Or a deep silent cry?
Does a prayer —
float light as confetti?
shoot fast as an arrow?
wisp wily through the air?
Or watch vigilant over all?
Well…
I can’t say what a prayer is
or how it works.
I do know you have a heart
and I do too.
You hold
something close,
something precious,
something fragile
inside of you which
words can’t express.
And, I do too.
On this day, together,
let us remember
the cloud of witnesses
who’ve gone before us.
Let us stand in solidarity
with each other—
brothers and sisters
who are for
goodness over evil,
hope for the hopeless,
peace on earth.
Let us join hands
for the pain, the glory
the brutal, the beautiful
the dark, the light.
Whatever you pray,
however you pray,
wherever you pray,
unite your heartfelt cry
to a chorus of silent
and singing voices
adding your unique prayer.
You are not alone.
